Marga GUAL SOLER

Dr. Marga Gual Soler is a Senior Project Director at the Center for Science Diplomacy, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), where she explores the role of science as a universal language to help break down barriers and build bridges between peoples and nations. She currently leads the AAAS-Cuba science diplomacy program, develops global science diplomacy research, education and capacity building initiatives, and serves as senior editor of the policy journal Science & Diplomacy.
Marga serves on the Research, Innovation and Science Experts High-Level Group to European Commissioner Carlos Moedas, helped design the first Science, Technology and Innovation Diplomacy Strategy for the Spanish Government, and was named one of the “100 Spanish experts in innovation” by Fundación Cotec, «40 Under 40 Latinos in Foreign Policy» by The Huffington Post, and “10 Latinas Think Big Innovators to Watch in 2016.”

For the past 10 years, she has worked in more than 40 countries developing innovative bridges between science, policy, and society across political, geographical, disciplinary and cultural divides. She is the founder of the Science Diplomacy & Leadership Program, a pioneer annual science diplomacy immersion course in Washington DC, and the Science Slam Festival, a science education and communication event combining science and the performing arts in Latin America in partnership with UNESCO. She is a policy consultant for the «Participatory Engagement with Scientifi c and Technological Research through Performance (PERFORM)» project funded under the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme.

Marga has organized and spoken at the premier science policy and diplomacy gatherings worldwide and published dozens of academic, policy and media works in English and Spanish. She received a Ph.D. in biomedical sciences from the University of Queensland in Australia, a bachelor’s and master’s from the University of Barcelona in Spain and is an alumna of the prestigious Georgetown Global Competitiveness Leadership Program.
