InsSciDE Case Studies in S4D4C’s MOOC

With coinciding launches of training courses in summer 2020, InsSciDE and our sister project in the EU Science Diplomacy Cluster S4D4C teamed up to make each of our science diplomacy trainings deeper and more compelling.

While InsSciDE assigned modules from S4D4C’s massive open online course (MOOC) to the students of our first edition of Warsaw Science Diplomacy School (WSDS), S4D4C featured case studies from our Environment and Health work packages in their European Science Diplomacy Online Course.

The two InsSciDE case studies now available in the Hands On! module of S4D4C’s MOOC dissect science diplomacy practices that fueled international tensions during the UN Convention of the Law of the Sea and plot a complex arena of scientists and diplomats involved in Europe’s response to the plague outbreak in Oporto in 1899.

The historical reflections by Sam Robinson (InsSciDE Environment) and Céline Paillette (InsSciDE Health) complement S4D4C’s contemporary case studies on infectious disease, food security, open science and the Middle Eastern research centre SESAME.

S4D4C’s free self-paced course consists of eight online modules, designed to introduce the international science and policy systems and the complex interface between science, diplomacy, and international policy.

InsSciDE’s Warsaw Science Diplomacy School, by contrast, is a one-week intensive and distinctly interpersonal training programme with a focus on fostering interdisciplinary connections and collaborations. It draws on historical cases studies to develop policy and strategic outcomes relevant to the present and future. The first edition in June 2020 was hosted online due to the coronavirus outbreak, enabling a truly global cohort of students as well as the opportunity to open up some of the otherwise closed sessions to the public - check out resources and insights from WSDS 2020 below:

  • Public lectures: Power & Strategy
  • WSDS Chronicles: Week’s Overview, Health Diplomacy Open Session, Connecting History & Future, Health Diplomacy Open Session
  • WSDS Student Takes: articles by the alumni on science diplomacy in ocean conservations, biodiversity and the Scramble for Africa colonial period.

Our Executive Director Claire Mays also joined a webinar in July to discuss the content and added value of InsSciDE’s two historical case studies to the existing contemporary cases by S4D4C. In a quote nicely depicting the constantly evolving synergies between the two EU Horizon 2020 projects, S4D4C Coordinator Elke Dall said:

“The cooperation between S4D4C and InsSciDE in the EU Science Diplomacy Cluster is giving the topic additional momentum and we are looking forward to building a joint community with our training participants around the topic with the joint LinkedIn group and our joint website www.science-diplomacy.eu.”
