The path to a shared science diplomacy for Europe - InsSciDE Concluding Conference

23-24 June | Paris

Coming full circle since the InsSciDE project was launched at the Academy of Sciences in Paris, the team and its now-much-larger following will convene once again in Paris for the project’s concluding conference on 23-24 June 2022.

This free and open event will conclude more than four years of work by the InsSciDE project, present the results and look to the future with the European Union Science Diplomacy Alliance (founded by H2020 projects S4D4C, InsSciDE and EL-CSID).

We are honored that this final project milestone is an official event of the French Presidency of the Council of the EU!

Thursday June 23 - Sorbonne University

Morning | Maison de la Recherche Sorbonne Université, rue Serpente

From InsSciDE to the EU SD Alliance: Science diplomacy as concept, practical challenges and next steps
Two sets of parallel workshops on conceptual and practical challenges in science diplomacy will be led by members of InsSciDE and the EU Science Diplomacy Alliance, exploring first, what we can learn from science diplomacy in the past and then, the challenges and opportunities on the path ahead. Implied in the respective segments is engaging with InsSciDE results and plotting next actions for the Alliance.

Afternoon | Sorbonne Université, Richelieu amphithéâtre

Science diplomacy beyond English
International speakers from Academies and other scientific institutions will discuss initiatives that advance French as a language of science. In a subsequent session, we will examine the historical role of the French language in science diplomacy, from networks of French-speaking countries to international organizations and major scientific cooperation programs, to elaborate on current issues and develop new project ideas.

Concluding InsSciDE
InsSciDE members share conceptual and operational perspectives for a shared European science diplomacy based on their four years of research and actions. A volume of the project’s case studies and policy briefs will be handed to conference participants.

Friday June 24 - UNESCO Headquarters

Morning | UNESCO, place de Fontenoy

Science diplomacy and multilingualism: European and non-European languages
Multilingualism in science can open up opportunities that democratize access to scientific knowledge, enable valuable indigenous knowledge to circulate widely and level the playing-field of non-Western research communities. Among diplomats, speaking several languages is prerequisite, yet the practice is overwhelmingly conducted in English. In this session, a series of short statements from Africa, South America, Asia and Europe set the scene for a deeper discussion about the importance and trajectory of multilingualism in science diplomacy and its various contexts.

Open science: A new dimension for science diplomacy
The panel will explore the relation between open science and science diplomacy, analyzing the tensions between the right to knowledge and the risks to security that may accompany a freer flow of science and data. Convening a social sciences lens with pragmatic perspectives from the field, discussions will probe the issue of research integrity, deliberate the challenges of ‘opening science’ considering systemic interstate rivalry, debate the balance between openness and protection, and examine how the movement will change dynamics of science diplomacy.

The EU Science Diplomacy Alliance: A new space for dialogue and research
The EU SD Alliance presents its vision and forthcoming activities as InsSciDE, the last of the three Horizon 2020 research projects that founded it, comes to a close.
